What happens to rivers that receive untreated sewage?

The list of polluted rivers in Brazil is huge. Almost all major Brazilian cities have one. But where does this pollution come from? Why are these rivers polluted?

The answer to these questions can be summarized as follows: one of the main factors in this pollution is the incorrect discharge of domestic sewage into watercourses, generated by the lack of basic sanitation in Brazil. Currently, Brazil only treats 43% of the sewage it generates. Much of the sewage generated is not even collected from homes.

This situation generates serious problems for the environment and the health of the population, and generates impacts for the development of the country.
